Weight Loss Question

Several people have been asking about situations with weight allowances and the 1 ½ % rule and if being over that amount would disqualify a wrestler or not.  Mr Faulkens shared this info at the IHSWCA fall clinic and also sent out a video to every school via their athletic dept.  But this Situation can be confusing so to make sure we all had interpreted the info correctly I emailed Mr Faulkens at the IHSAA.  Below is our discussion and his responses.

OK looking for clarification on this so I can pass along to coaches.  Does the wrestler’s weight loss plan reset every week?  say a kid’s plan says he can be at weight 138 one week then because of snow days and no practice his next weigh-in they get a total of 4lbs allowance, so he weighs in at 142 then has another match in a week can he weigh-in at 138?

 Thanks

Tyson,

The weight loss plan does not compute for the weight allowances for tournaments and missed practices.  It simply gives the lowest eligible weight class for the wrestler each week.  Losing too much weight in one week does not disqualify a wrestler; it simply prevents him/her from counting the weigh-in as a qualifying weigh-in.  Call me if not sure.

So if a wrestler who has made weight all year no prob and then got a weight allowance right before sectionals due  to snow and no practices and then in turn would have to lose more than 1 1/2% to reach his weight class again for sectionals would that disqualify said wrestler from wrestling at that weight for sectionals?

Absolutely not. The wrestler will be eligible.
